Self-advocacy realized.

Date:October 22, 2022
Venue:Lincoln Theater

The Lincoln theater on U st. fills up with patrons. Aside from a chair and a microphone, the stage sits empty but lit.

There was no zany music playing in the background, there was no opening act (or two) trying to raise the crowd’s temperature.

The random conversations I heard around me were topical, informed and compassionate to one another. [Literally a toe got stepped on, and the two people involved apologized for being in each others’ way before “enjoy the show” was offered by both.]
The anticipation of the audience evolved from expected to tangible.

Jerrod in a trucker ball cap appears from the side of the stage, sits down at the chair, picks up the mic and meets the lofty expectations of a truly engaged audience.
Carmichael’s clarity of thought seems to serve as his illustration of purpose.

Now if you’re a fan of short order comedy. Where punchlines are as comforting as soul food; but delivered every 3-5secs while you wait, this is not the show for you. I’ve been to them…I’ll continue to go to them; this wasn’t that.

If you have a more refined comedic palette; live for the humor found in nuance and juxta positioned thoughts. If you have the patience to allow a storyteller to develop their story. If you see the craft as an opportunity to educate and elevate through an artists’ interpretation of their own life’s experience?

Don’t miss the next show he does near you.

He’s unbelievably good.
