Has Crayons Will Travel
Often when the word colorful is used to describe a comedian, it’s referencing their language or their clothing…
When discussing Patrice Deveaux, I feel compelled to use the word. But only to describe how she intends for you to see the world when she leaves the stage.
Wise but youthful, driven but chill. Patrice brought the considerable presence of her talent and supportive entourage to her debut at Harlem’s legendary Apollo Theater.
Using a full size box of 152-Crayola crayons, Patrice skillfully illustrates 3D portraits of her family and friends. In thoughtful detail, she outlines the transition of social eras we’re all experiencing. And when necessary she presses down harder to make the lines clearer…essentially making the image resistant to watered down interpretations of her art. All while remaining relatable, using hues familiar to the audience.
Its not every day when you can hear someone on stage and actually see the aura of prayers and well wishes encircling them. Like the emblems on a NASCAR competitor,
Never mean from the stage but you get the intention she’s itching for a game of the dozens…and any street corner will do.
Comedy as an artform often draws the malcontent, neurodivergent doomers into its ranks. When someone can be honest with you and yet make you feel lighter you notice. The Apollo noticed. Get a ticket when she performs near you; you’ll notice too.
